FAQ
Tesla questions
The short answer is YES. Our Teslas offer a generous range that easily covers a full day’s exploration around Maui. Plus, with the island’s numerous EV charging stations, you can conveniently top up if needed. Rest assured, an EV from Maui EVs provides more than enough range for all your Maui vacation plans. For detailed information, please refer to our Driving Around Maui page.
No, we want to make sure you enjoy every second of your vacation! However, we do request that you return the vehicle with at least 25 miles of range left. This will ensure that we can safely get you to the airport and get us back to the office after the return (if you choose our office drop off service). If you return the vehicle with less than 25 miles of range, then you may need to find alternative transportation to the airport.
Your Tesla should be equipped with a map accessible from the vehicle touchscreen. You can use to map to find suitable charging stations around the island. We also provide a map from Plugshare on our charging stations page, as well as a list of hotel charging stations.
Your vehicle charge time will vary based on the type of charger you use (ranging from 3 miles per hour of charge to 200 miles per hour of charge). Here is a nice comparison of different charger types and how many miles you can expect to get for each hour of charging.
Our Tesla Model 3 can go up to 272 miles (437 km) on a single charge, and our Tesla Model Y can go up to 303 miles (487 km) in a single charge.
You can reach many of Maui’s most popular destinations on a single charge, and thus many of our guests will not need to charge a single time during their vacation! However, the answer to this question largely depends on how much you plan to drive. Though don’t worry if you do need to top up, Maui has a ton of conveniently located charging stations.
Absolutely! At Maui EVs, we understand the importance of keeping your Tesla charged and ready to go, which is why we provide the necessary charging adapters for your convenience – and it’s all on the house!
- J1772 Adapter: This adapter is included with each rental as our standard. It‘s compatible with ~75% of public charging stations on Maui, ensuring your exploration of the island is unhindered.
- CCS Adapter: Crunched on time? We offer a CCS adapter for faster charging (though usable at fewer stations). This adapter is included as well (free of “charge”) in each of our rentals.
- Mobile Connector: To offer you the utmost convenience, we also provide a limited stock of mobile connectors on request. This adapter allows charging from a standard wall outlet, adding about 5–6 miles of range per hour. It‘s perfect for overnight charging while you rest for the next day’s adventures.
Rental questions

Yes, we recommend paying as soon as you make your reservation to secure your booking. While you can reserve without immediate payment, your reservation isn’t secured until we receive payment. If someone else pays for the same dates before you, they’ll have priority.
Don’t worry—our cancellation policy offers a full refund if you cancel at least 48 hours before pickup.
The easiest way to change your reservation details is to reply back to your reservation confirmation email with your request. You may also contact us. To speed up the process, please include your reservation number or any details about your reservation in the request.
Yes, we do! At Maui EVs, we’re all about aligning with your travel plans, which is why we offer early morning and late night reservations. For these out-of-hours bookings, our contactless pickup service ensures your Tesla is ready whenever you arrive.
This service does include a small additional fee. It covers the extra steps we take to ensure your vehicle is prepped and waiting for you, no matter the time. This small fee helps us maintain our high standard of service and convenience, allowing you to embark on your Maui adventure without delay, whenever you arrive.
- Full refund provided if reservation is canceled more than 48 hours before pickup.
- 50% refund provided if reservation is canceled between 48 and 24 hours before pickup.
- No refund available if reservation is canceled within 24 hours of pickup. This is due to the logistical challenge of re-renting the vehicle on short notice.
We understand that plans change in life and when they do we make it easy to cancel or change your reservation. Simply reply back to your reservation confirmation email or contact us with your reservation details and we’ll take care of the rest.
Currently, due to insurance reasons, we are only able to support customers from the US and Canada. However, we are always looking to expand our services. If you’re from a different country and interested in renting a Tesla from us, please do get in touch. Your feedback helps us understand demand and work with our insurance provider to broaden our coverage in the future.
Absolutely not. At Maui EVs, we pride ourselves on our clear, upfront pricing. The initial quote you see is the final cost, no surprises. Do note that parking fees (when selecting contact-free pickup) and vehicle charging costs aren’t included. Also, if the rental agreement isn’t upheld (for instance, if the car is damaged or returned late), additional fees may apply as per our terms.

Yes. We are proud to offer top of the line safety seats and boosters that are available to add-on to your reservation. We also have details on the best seat choice for your child when you get to the features on our reservation process.
The law in Hawaii regarding car seats is: “Hawaii law requires children under the age of four to ride in a child safety seat and children ages of four through seven to ride in a child safety seat or a booster seat when traveling in a motor vehicle. The driver will be held responsible for compliance with the law.”
To rent with Maui EVs, you must be at least 25 years old due to our insurance requirements.
Absolutely! However, due to a quirk in our reservation system, you won’t be able to book directly online. Please contact us directly with your reservation details, and we’ll ensure your reservation is set up correctly for your trip.
Probably, we’ve made such arrangements for cruise ship customers in the past. Please share your overnight parking needs with us, and we’ll strive to accommodate you on our lot or suggest other options!
For your safety and to protect the vehicle from damage, you are not allowed to drive off road, and on specific roads designated in the rental agreement that are considered hazardous. For your convenience the relevant section of the rental agreement is below:
“The rented vehicle may only be operated on authorized, paved roads and Client is strictly prohibited from driving the rented vehicle on unauthorized or unpaved roads such as the ‘back side’ of the road to Hana or any area beyond the Kipahulu region of Haleakala National
Park. Client is specifically prohibited from driving the rented vehicle on the section of Highway 31 known as the Piilani Highway that is beyond the Kipahulu area counting down from mile marker 38 which travels the southeast side of Maui towards Ulupalakua and the Kula Highway (Highway 37), as well as any unauthorized or unpaved roads of the Kahakuloa area”
Note: You can drive the road to Hana along the traditional paved road, just not the back side.
Absolutely! Driving the iconic Road to Hana is one of Maui’s most memorable experiences and we wholeheartedly encourage it. Our Teslas are perfect for navigating the winding, scenic route starting from Kahului and proceeding clockwise to Kipahulu (and back the same route), offering about 63 miles of awe-inspiring views and natural wonders.
Please take a look at the image below for a clear illustration of the suggested route. However, for your safety and in line with our policies, we kindly request our customers to avoid the ‘back side’ of the road to Hana, also known as the stretch from Kipahulu to Ulupalakua. This section of the route can be quite hazardous, and our top priority at Maui EVs is ensuring your journey is safe as well as unforgettable!
Yes. If you have a large party we will make multiple trips to pickup your party and ensure everyone arrives safely at the office. We also offer a contact free pickup option (available for a small fee) if that is more convenient for you.
At Maui EVs, we understand the need for flexibility on your vacation. We allow one additional driver for FREE with each rental. To include an additional driver:

- Input the additional driver’s information on the ‘Customer’ information page (step 3).
The additional driver must provide proof of insurance or purchase our Additional Liability Insurance (ALI) for the rental duration. If you forgot to add an additional driver during the initial reservation, don’t worry. Just reach out to us, and we’ll help you update your reservation.

Insurance Requirement questions
Liability insurance is required to protect you and others in case of an accident that causes injury or property damage. It ensures that any costs associated with such incidents are covered, providing peace of mind during your rental period.
Most personal auto insurance policies include coverage for rental vehicles. To be sure, please check your policy documents or contact your insurance provider directly. They can confirm whether your liability coverage extends to rental cars.
If you don’t have personal auto insurance, you can purchase our Additional Liability Insurance (ALI) coverage when booking your rental. This coverage meets the liability insurance requirement and ensures you’re protected during your rental period.
No, you don’t need to upload or bring a physical copy of your insurance policy when you rent from us. By acknowledging that you have liability insurance, you confirm that you meet the requirement. When necessary, we will request proof later via email.
No, if you have your own personal liability insurance that covers rental vehicles, you do not need to purchase the ALI coverage. Just acknowledge that you have suitable coverage when booking your rental, and we’ll reach out via email if we have any questions or require an upload.
While many credit cards do offer collision damage insurance, it’s important to note that we require proof of liability insurance for our Tesla rentals which credit cards typically don’t provide. Your existing car insurance from most states should cover this. If you don’t have car insurance or if you’d like more coverage, we offer Additional Liability Insurance (ALI). You can add this when you make your initial reservation with us.
If you do not have personal liability insurance and choose not to purchase our ALI coverage, we cannot proceed with the rental, as liability insurance is a mandatory requirement for all rentals at Maui EVs.
Travel insurance policies typically do not include liability coverage for rental cars. They may cover personal injury or lost items but usually exclude auto liability. Please review your travel insurance policy or consult with the provider for specific details.
Have a question that we didn’t answer (or a comment/suggestion)? Please, feel free to contact us, and we’ll do our best to help (and probably put it up here to help others out as well)!
